Weiner allegedly sent explicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl last year. The girl, who has not been identified, told the Daily Mail last year that Weiner knew she was underage.
The girl’s allegations followed a report that Weiner exchanged lewd messages with a woman while lounging in bed with his young son Jordan.
According to the Times, Weiner surrendered to the FBI Friday morning and will plead guilty “to a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor,” as part of a plea agreement.
He will likely have to register as a sex offender as a result of the plea. The charge has a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
During the FBI’s investigation into the allegations Weiner sent explicit messages to an underage girl, they discovered emails relevant to their investigation into former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state. The discovery of these emails prompted former FBI Director James Comey to re-open the Clinton investigation.
