The Autel Robotics X-Star Premium Drone
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never flown a drone before or not. aerial imagery is your thing, then you get a bonus because that’s what this baby does best. It was made for the serious photographer.is going to deliver an amazing experience for you. If capturing
There’s no delay in getting started as this drone comes out of the box ready to fly. If you just want to get the feel for flying it, you don’t even need to worry about setting up the data link to the navigation source. Just keep it close and put it through its paces. There will be time for more sophisticated play later on. This quadcopter was born to explore.
Since the purpose of this beauty is to take pictures, let’s talk about the working end of the task. This drone has a 4K/12MP gimbal stabilized camera. The lens is a super wide angle with a 108-degree field of view (FOV) for capturing the relevant visual information and ignoring those areas where fisheye will distort the images.
The three-axis gimbal provides excellent stabilization for the camera that is independently able to position itself about the gimbal axes. The ability to record video and photographs is possible up to 1.2 miles ahead of the quadcopter. The clarity of the results using the Smooth Ultra HD video capability or taking the 12 MP photos with HD Live View is nothing short of incredible.
Photo capture can be done in RAW or JPEG separately or in combination. The photo modes to choose from are Single Shot, Burst, AEB, Bracketed Frames, and Time-Lapse. Video capture can be done at 30 fps in 4K mode, 60 fps at 2.7K, 120 fps at 1080p and if you’re really into slow-mo action, 240 fps at 720p. If you have a smartphone capable of linking to the drone, you can watch the video feed live. If not, wait until the drone is back and you can take the micro-SD card out of the quadcopter and look at the video on your phone, tablet or laptop.
The transmitter provides for flight control functions such as throttle and movement of the helicopter as well as some button specific controls right on the transmitter if you are flying in one of the assisted modes vice automatic GPS controlled modes.
There is an LCD screen on the transmitter so you can monitor critical flight data but not the video feed. You can, however, trigger the camera to take a single shot photo from the transmitter pad. It will be a blind shot from your perspective but who knows what kind of interesting things you’ll see when the drone returns home.
There is an optional mobile device you can buy that fits into a slot on the side of the transmitter. Using the mobile app built into the software, the drone will send back a 720p streaming video of what the drone sees. The mobile device also gives you greater control over camera and flight control settings.
Autel calls this flight control system intelligent as it will keep the quadcopter on course regardless of the conditions it is encountering in flight. The course corrections are automatic with corrections being provided by GPS position. There is also access to the GLONASS satellite system for position correction as well providing a redundant feature most drones don’t provide.
You have the ability to lay in the navigation plan so the drone will fly the set pattern you tell it to. All you need to do is enter the waypoints and home location to ensure the drone does the job you set it out to do and returns home automatically. Autel also provides a “Secure Fly” function on the aircraft which by another name is a fail safe feature. That means if the drone loses it’s way and has no waypoint to continue on, it will automatically return to its point of origin, to you.
The flight control modes include Follow, Orbit, and Waypoints of GoHome.
The Autel Robotics X-Star Premium Drone is a very intuitive machine to fly. Your skills will increase over time but right from the start, you’ll be able to exercise most of its capability. You might be a bit slower than some, but proficiency comes with practice. You will enjoy flying it.
